JAMES W. LONG, M.D.
Dr. Long grew up in EauClaire,Wisconsin. He received his premedical training at the University of Minnesota earning a Bachelor of Arts where he also earned academic honors as a Williams Scholar and as a member of the Big Ten Conference Academic Football Team in 1967. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School, Madison, Wisconsin in 1971.

The following year he interned at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Newton Lower Falls, Massachusetts, and then returned to the University of Wisconsin where, in 1977, he completed five years of residency and research in Ophthalmology. He began his private practice in Ophthalmology in Salem in 1977.

Dr. Long has performed thousands of ocular refractive surgery procedures.
He was one of the first Salem eye surgeons to perform radial keratotomy surgery in 1984 and he has had a busy refractive surgery practice ever since. He has been performing Excimer Laser surgery since 1996 and has been offering LASIK surgery to his patients since 1997.

Dr. Long is a Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the International Society of Refractive Surgeons. Dr. Long has served as Chief of Ophthalmology and as Chief of Surgery for Salem Hospital and for four years served on the Executive Committee for the Marion-Polk County Medical Society. In addition to his surgical expertise, Dr.Long has provided daily eye care and emergency eye care to residents of the Mid-Willamette Valley for 25 years.

BETSY D. McDOWELL, O.D.
Betsy McDowell majored in biology at the Honors College at Washington State University. She received a Bachelor of Science in Visual Science from Pacific University, Forest Grove, Oregon. After completing externships with the Washington State School for the Blind, Seattle Indian Health Services, and the Portland Optometric Clinic, she graduated from Pacific University College of Optometry in 1982.

Dr. McDowell has been affiliated with the Oregon Eye Center since 1985. She completed the therapeutics certification in 1999. Optometry is a rewarding career and she enjoys caring for her patients needs for eye examinations, cataract and refractive surgery after care, contact lens challenges, and treatment of dry eye, allergy, ocular inflammation, and infection. She is a panel provider for most insurance carriers including Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Medicare, Oregon Health Plan, Vision Services Plan, Providence Health Plan, OEA Choice, ODS, and Pacificare.

She is a member of the American Optemetric Association, the AOA Contact Lens Section, the Oregon Optemetric Physicians Association and Willamette Optometric Society. Her volunteer activities include the American Association of University Women, where she is a past president and state officer, the Salem Act Association, Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Association and the Salem-Keizer School District. Travel, gardening, watercolor painting, and water sports are among her favorite pastimes.

GREGORY CHRISTIANSEN, M.D.
Dr. Gregory Christiansen graduated from the University of Utah Medical School, Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2000. Following an internship at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Christiansen completed his residency training at the prestigious Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, Minnesota in 2004. He then completed his fellowship at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, in 2005.

Dr. Christiansen specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of the eye. He is an experienced cataract and glaucoma surgeon, having performed more than a thousand microsurgical procedures. Dr. Christiansen has served as the Medical Director for the Special Olympics, Salt Lake City, Utah. Also, he has been actively involved with research and has been published in several peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Christiansen is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In his leisure time, Dr. Christiansen enjoys outdoor activities, including mountain biking, camping and sailing with his wife, Kathy, and their three children.
